The man, a resident of Lausanne, went hiking alone in the mountainous Pic Chaussy region the day before, police said.

Late Monday, the man’s wife contacted emergency authorities about the disappearance of her husband.

A search involving rescue officials from Leysin, the local gendarmerie and the Rega emergency service, using two helicopters, retrieved the man’s body between the Pointe des Semelys and the Chenau Pass, police said.

An investigation is under way to determine the exact causes of the accident.
