A Mercedes driven by German racing driver Pascal Wehrlein, 19, hit two people on the road during filming in South Tyrol where the German football team is preparing for this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

A 63-year-old German tourist was flown to hospital by helicopter with serious injuries and a local man from St Leonhard in Passeier was also injured.

Mercedes sponsors the German national side and footballers Benedikt Höwedes and Julian Draxler were passengers in the cars, Bild newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed there had been a “serious accident”. They will hold a press conference at midday with more details.

Nico Rosberg, who was also taking part in the promotional video, wrote on Twitter: “I am shocked by the accident. My thoughts are with the two people who were injured and I wish them a fast recovery.”
