'Just go to every bar and ask for a job'

1. Where are you located and what do you do? 

 

I live in Vienna. For a living, I work at a bar. For that little bit of extra living, I draw and sell pictures.

 

2. What brought you to Austria and how long have you been here?

 

I've been here for six and a half years. Two things brought me to Austria - a girl and a desire to leave England. I had had enough of London and where else in England can one go after that? London is the greatest city in the world.

 

3. How did you land your job and do you have any tips for someone looking for a similar work? 

 

I turned up in Vienna and figured that working as a barman was my only job as long as I couldn't speak German. I sat in a pub drawing for a few hours and was approached by the owner, who wanted to know what I was drawing. We got talking and I basically begged him for a job until he gave me one.

 

My career as a designer started with an online competition. I saw it online, submitted some drawings and won it. After that, I just kept going.

 

For those willing to work in a bar in Austria, my tip is really straightforward - just go to every bar and ask for a job. Make yourself known. Tips for those willing to work as a designer... Well, I myself am still trying to make it.

 

4. Is it important for you to speak German in your position? 

 

No, a basic grasp of German suffices.

 

5. What are the best and worst parts of working in Austria? 

 

The best part for me is having an easy job and being able to choose when I work. The worst part is dealing with locals because my German is still so bad.

 

6. Do you plan on staying?

 

For the time being, yes. Long term, probably not - there's so much more to see than Austria!
