Talks break down on Norway's EU funding
Talks in Brussels over Norway's contribution to the European Union broke up without a conclusion on Friday after Norwegian negotiators declared that the gap between Norway's view and the amount that European Union officials are demanding was too large to be bridged.
"There are different views on the scope of the contribution. We therefore need some time for informal conversations to create a new platform to negotiate further," Norway's ambassador to the EU Atle Leikvoll, told Aftenposten. "We are far apart," was all he would say on the size of the difference. Prime Minister Erna Solberg recently complained that the EU has demanded "a significant amount" more than the 1.8 billion euros which EFTA countries Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein have paid for access to the EU internal market over the past five years. No new talks have yet been scheduled.
