A huge section roof at a shopping centre in the south west of the country collapsed overnight on Thursday, just two days after the mall opened. See images of the collapsed roof here.

Around 1,200 square metres of roof at the Grand Moun centre in the town of Saint-Pierre-du-Mont in the Landes department caved in at around 2am on Friday morning.

Luckily it caused no injuries, but the centre, which welcomed 30,000 shoppers through its doors on Thursday, has been forced to close just two days after it opened.

Most of the 80,000 square metre mall, which houses 85 shops and a Leclerc supermarket, will remain closed over the coming days.

Leclerc’s director Bernard Bornancin said: "The only relief is that it is only material”

“Nobody was injured and ultimately, the impact will be economic. We will do everything to ascertain how it happened and then reopen as soon as possible."

In February The Local reported how a 200 square metre section roof of a Carrefour supermarket in the city of Nice also collapsed. It was described as a miracle that no one was killed.
