The Colosseum was temporarily transformed into a galaxy far far away on Sunday as part of celebrations for the annual Star Wars Day.

Created by fans of George Lucas’ cult films as an occasion to celebrate all things Star Wars related, the first Star Wars Day was first celebrated in 2011 in Toronto, Canada.

May 4th was chosen as the official date simply because it sounds a lot like “May the force be with you”.

Dressed as their favourite characters from the film series including Darth Vader, Obi Wan and Luke Skywalker, fans in Rome on Sunday reconstructed their favourite moments from the film series.

We’ve collected photos of some of the best costumes and moments from the day.
