The floods which hit eastern Germany last summer have led to some bizarre claims for relief, including one homeowner who wanted €6,000 for the loss of their Wellington boots.

Spokesman for Investionsbank Sachsen-Anhalt Michaela Möllhof confirmed a report in Focus magazine from Monday that among the 2,500 applications for flood relief in Saxony-Anhalt there had been some with little hope of success.

The homeowner whose luxury Wellington boots were lost also wanted money for six damaged wine glasses.

“There have been some very audacious enquiries,” Möllhof said.

One woman whose €9,500 oil-fired heater was damaged sought €30,000 from the flood fund for a new wood pellet heater. The claim failed.

Another woman wanted €500 for her jam jars which were damaged when water poured into her cellar. The claim, put in by her son, also failed, as did the Wellington boot attempt.
