Munich to get 'Tetris cube' hotel
Munich's old city centre is to receive an ultra modern addition to its skyline in the shape of a new hotel dubbed 'the Tetris cube'. Work is set to begin on Hotel Königshof on Karlsplatz in central Munich from the end of 2017 and it is expected to last two years, joint owners, brothers Carl, Michael and Stephan Geisel, in a statement on Wednesday.
The luxury hotel will be built on the site of the existing post-war Hotel Königshof, which is set to be demolished. And judging by architectural plans and artists impressions, the building may yet prove divisive among city residents.
Designed by Spanish architect Nieto Sobejano, the plans show a nine-storey building with large windows and viewing platforms. A gap runs down the middle of the box-like structure allowing foot passengers to walk through the building.
This gap, which has earned the hotel the comparison with the block-stacking game Tetris, will house the entrances to the lobby and reception.
The 95-room hotel will also be home to a rooftop restaurant with panoramic views of the city, and a spa. The owners said they were looking into allowing non-guests and visitors partial access to the building.
