Biology pupils find horse in kebab meat test
Schoolchildren in western Germany came across horse meat while testing doner kebabs in a biology experiment. It comes a year after the horse meat scandal which showed much meat on sale in Europe had been mislabelled.

A biology teacher in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, wanted his pupils to learn how scientists test meat to see which animal it has come from, the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) reported on Wednesday.
He bought three doner kebabs, as well as a sample of horse meat from a butcher, from surrounding towns and set the class the task of analyzing them.
They found that one of the kebabs was made not only of beef, but also of horse.
“Our brief was not to uncover another scandal,” teacher and project leader Florian Schaller told the newspaper. “It was more that we wanted to show pupils the methods used in molecular-biology to identify meat types.”
Pupils at the Schiller Gymnasium used doner kebabs from vendors in Dortmund, Witten and Bochum.
Schaller made sure the samples were anonymous, meaning that it was unclear which vendor the horse meat was being served at.
Bochum town authorities told the WAZ that places which serve food are subjected to regular hygiene tests.
