Carer took photos of the dead for WhatsApp chat
A Bavarian care home worker allegedly took photos of her dead patients and shared them with her colleagues on messaging service WhatsApp, along with sarcastic comments.
Posting the snapshots of the corpses has landed the Nuremberg carer before the courts and she could face a two-year prison sentence.
The woman was employed at a Nuremberg home when she began taking the pictures of recently deceased residents.
She posted the pictures on a group chat to two colleagues using the messaging platform, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported.
The group was called “the audacious three” and many of the posts were accompanied by flippant comments, such as "Probably too much morphine”.
According to the Süddeutsche the woman took “many” photos over the last year before she was caught.
The case first came to light after an acquaintance of one of the workers reported the incident to their boss. The employer called in the three colleagues and "took them to task," the care home's lawyer said.
"Such behaviour is unacceptable to my client and will not be tolerated," the lawyer said.
The worker who took the pictures resigned her position, but without giving proper notice, which prompted the care home to take her before a labour court.
Her employer also reported the case to police, leading the state prosecutor to file criminal charges.
She is now being prosecuted for "disparaging the memory of the dead," which carries a maximum of a two-year prison sentence or a fine.
The second worker also resigned while the third was on maternity leave, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported.
