Skydiver dies in record breaking attempt
A German skydiver died trying to break a group skydiving record in the United States on Thursday. Her parachute failed to open properly on the 5,500-metre drop.
Experienced skydiver Diana Paris travelled from Berlin to Arizona to join 222 other hopefuls from across the world who wanted to be a part of the jump.
The event organizer, Skydive Arizona, released a statement saying that the 46-year-old died due to a parachute malfunction. There is an investigation underway into what exactly went wrong.
“It is sad, but it can happen,” fellow skydiver Debbie Franzese told the Bild newspaper. Paris had, her husband told the paper, successfully completed 1,500 jumps.
The group was dressed in different colours and had around 70 seconds to make their formation before releasing their parachutes above Eloy, the world's biggest landing spot for skydivers.
A German and a Brit died at the same site while taking part in a jump in December 2013.
On Friday the same group will attempt to break the record again, but with 221 jumpers. “Our friend can, and will not, be replaced,” said team spokesman Gulcin Gilber.
