Police learned on Wednesday that a mystery boat floating for years in a Swedish harbour belonged to a Norwegian man who'd didn't even realize he still owned it.

"He was very surprised. He had thought that the boat had been sold," Tomas Andersson of the Gothenburg police told the Expressen newspaper.

The boat, which had been imported from the US almost a decade ago, had been floating for two years near the police headquarters of Strömstad, north of Gothenburg and close to the Norwegian border.

When police uploaded pictures of the mysterious boat to Facebook on Monday, the mystery was picked up by Norwegian media, a move that caught the attention of the boat's owner.

"I guess this shows that people have different expectations when it comes to economics. This isn't an ordinary boat either, it's a incredibly nice one," Andersson added.

Indeed, the boatt's estimated value is 500,000 kronor to 700,000 kronor ($108,000).

The Norwegian, who owns several companies, had apparently "forgotten" that he hadn't sold the boat. He has now been asked to cough up rent for the past two years.

"A happy ending, if not rather strange," the police wrote on their Facebook page.
