Luxottica, the Italian creator of style-conscious sunglasses the world over, has announced it will join forces with Google to design fashionable glasses with built-in technology.

The Italian fashion group on Monday promised to develop “a new breed of eyewear”, with mini computers, created by Google, attached to the frames.

Google Glass technology gives wearers access to features such as a camera, weather reports and a calendar, all linked up to their eyewear. While the concept has been developed over the past few years, the Luxottica deal marks a move away from the tech niche to the mass consumer market.

Ray-Ban and Oakley, two of the Luxottica’s most fashionable brands, are being brought in as part of the deal, which the company promises will be “a dramatic step forward” for Google glasses.

The new venture follows Luxottica’s profits announcement last month, reporting sales of €7.3 billion and a net profit of €544.7 million. While sales remained steady at home in Europe, the company was boosted by positives figures in emerging markets such as China and Brazil.
