The mild spring weather has come to an abrupt end in some parts of southern Germany with snow falling on Sunday and Monday.

Forecasters are expecting up to half a metre of snow in Berechtesgaden, Chiemgau and the Allgäu in southern Bavaria.

Snow is also expected in the Black Forest and the Erzgebirge mountains in Saxony.

It is being caused by a low weather system called Ilse. Weather service DWD said it may mean ski resorts can open again.

“This should significantly improve conditions for winter sports there,” it said.

The rest of the country is likely to remain mild and wet.
