Spanish politician strips for role in gay film
Toni Cantó, the controversial actor-turned-politician who once compared Spain's language laws to paedophilia, has caused a stir yet again after baring all in his role as a gay sex tourist in an upcoming movie.
"I'm aware of the fact that I live in a society where it can be more shocking for politicians to show their backside than to steal or be paid under the table," the no-nonsense politician has said in the aftermath of his latest scandal.
Cantó, 49, has recently made a return to the big screen by starring in La Partida, 'The Last Match' in English, in which he plays a Spanish sex tourist in Cuba.
The film, which contains explicit sex scenes, tells the story of two Cuban rent boys who struggle with society’s prejudices as well as their own fears.
Cantó shot the movie in Havana in 2011, a few months before he stood for elections in regional polls in Valencia with Spain's centrist Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD) party.
"If you're asking me if I would have played a gay character in sex scenes while being an MP, the answer is yes,” Cantó told Spanish news agency EFE.
"I need to express my artistic side, otherwise I go a bit mad," the Valencian MP added as he described his plans to direct a political drama for the theatre.
Cantó famously put his foot in it last year by saying the ruling Popular Party's stringent language laws should be illegal in the same way that paedophilia is.
He’s an avid Twitter user, a habit that has won him as many followers as opponents.
