Public transport across Italy will come to a halt tomorrow, affecting all of the country's major cities, after unionists failed to reach an agreement over workers’ contracts.

The collective of five unions ordered the strike after talks with government ministers ended on Friday without securing new contracts for public transport staff.

While the majority of strikes will begin tomorrow morning, unions have warned some could start as early as 7.00pm today.

Rome’s metro, along with its network of trams, buses and local trains, will shut down at 8.30am tomorrow. There will, however, be a brief respite for city travellers between 5.00pm and 8.00pm, before the transport system will again grind to a halt until midnight.

City dwellers in Milan will get 15 minutes more shut-eye than those in the capital, as the strike gets underway at the later time of 8.45am. Transport workers in the country’s financial capital have also shifted their strike-siesta, to between 3.00pm and 6.00pm, before striking again for the rest of the evening.

Transport strikes will also be held in Turin, Naples, Genoa, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Bari and Palermo.
