An Italian MEP this week called for brothels to be reopened, suggesting a red light district should be created in Milan.

Matteo Salvini, an MEP and politician for Italy’s Northern League (Lega Nord), said he didn’t see “any problem” in having legal brothels in the country’s financial capital.

“Open a red light district in Milan, open a brothel in my neighbourhood and under my house. I don’t see any problem,” Salvini was quoted in Il Giornale as saying.

His comments came as a group of Milan politicians voted in favour of a referendum on whether brothels should be legalized.

The Lombardy region’s Commission for Institutional Affairs on Wednesday agreed on the move, which will now pass to the regional council for a vote, La Repubblica reported.

If approved citizens in the region would have the chance to vote on amending Italy’s Merlin law, which shut down brothels in the 1950s.

But while the idea is gaining momentum, it is not unanimously supported. The Commission decision passed thanks to votes from the Northern League and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, although members of the Democratic Party (PD) and New Centre-right (NCD) opposed the move.

The Northern League is, however, intent on pushing ahead, with plans to start collecting signatures in support of opening brothels, La Repubblica said.
