Residents of Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, have been given another reason to lament foreigners in their fine city after an American girl was caught urinating at a taxi rank in the heart of the city.

Taxi drivers and people sitting in Piazza Santa Croce looked on with dismay when, shortly before midnight on Thursday, an American girl crouched down between two cars and took a pee, the Florence edition of Corriere reported.

The scene was caught on camera by a taxi driver, who told the newspaper: “I couldn’t believe my eyes”.

“There were two girls,” he added.

“At first, I thought one had dropped her purse when I saw her bending down between the cars…but instead she was taking a pee. Others looked on with anger, but I wasn’t able to resist such a shameful scene, so I yelled at them in English, ‘animals’!”

Florence residents have long complained about foreigners behaving badly in their city.

City councillor Mario Razzanelli said last June that Piazza Santa Croce had become “an open-air brothel” after an American couple was caught having sex under the statue of mediaeval poet Dante Alighieri.

“Us taxi drivers see these shameful scenes every night,” the taxi driver told Corriere.

Early last year three students, also American, were caught overturning a police car on Via della Ninna, while graffiti on the city’s monuments reportedly costs thousands of euros each year to clean up.

In October, a German tourist was told to clean Florence's famous Ponte Vecchio fined €160 after his daughter drew on it with a felt-tip pen.
