A Bavarian police chief who was caught with 1.5 kilograms of cocaine in his work locker told investigators he had the drugs “for educational purposes,” according to reports on Friday.

This raised eyebrows in the Munich state prosecutor's office. Spokesman Thomas Steinkraus-Koch told the Augsburger Allgemeine that they were “seriously questioning” the narcotic officer's alibi.

Having cocaine to use in educational workshops was, he said, “not a plausible in this quantity.” The bundle had a street value of around €250,000.

The 52-year-old, who was head of the police narcotics department in Kempten, Allgäu, denied that he took drugs himself, but the state prosecutor has refused to comment on the results of a blood test taken to see whether he had illegal substances in his system.

Fellow police officers made the discovery after the man's wife rang the station where he worked to ask for help after an argument at home at the end of February.

The call prompted them to search his locker, inside which they found the cocaine. Theories began to spread that he had taken the package during a raid, or that he had ties to the mafia which is active in that part of southern Germany.

State prosecutors confirmed they were already handling charges connected to the man, which the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper reported in February involved domestic violence.
