Spain's wet winter had a sting in its tail.

The country's northern provinces of Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria have all taken a beating in recent days, with waves of up to 12 metres (40 feet) slamming into the coast.

The wild conditions, including winds of over 100 kilometres (62 miles) per hour even knocked the several metres off the top of a shipping beacon in the Galician town of Burela.

"We now have a Tower of Pisa," joked one local about the damaged beacon (below).

The image below shows the river Ultazama in the town of Trinidad de Arre, Navarre breaking its banks.

This picture shows the stadium of Spanish second division football club Sporting de Gijón, from the town of Gijón in Asturias after heavy rains.
