Munich's Ludwig-Maximilians University came out the highest, with its physics department placed 13th worldwide.

Stiff competition came from down the road at the city's Technical University, which was ranked 15th for the same subject.

In the capital, Berlin's Free University bagged 14th place for studying history in 2013/14, just behind the renowned Sorbonne University in Paris.

Another Berlin university, the Humboldt, was placed 20th for modern languages in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, which are released each year.

Over in the west of the country, the RWTH Aachen University was placed 14th for mechanical and aeronautical engineering.

Subjects at 42 German universities ranked in the top global 200, but it was Asian universities that did notably well this year – alongside the expected British and American academic heavyweights.

“The ranking show once again that German universities offer first class research in certain subjects,” said QS head researcher Ben Sowter.

Worldwide, Harvard ruled supreme by taking the top spot in 11 different subject areas. No German universities were ranked in the top ten in any of the 30 subject areas.
