Cop charged for selling stolen uniforms online
A former Swedish police officer has been charged after being caught selling stolen uniforms worth over 10,000 kronor ($1500) on eBay.
The 29-year-old man was hit with a charge of probation and to pay 140 day-fines proportional to his daily income. He had acquired the items, which included jackets, overalls and trousers, in 2012 and was supposed to incinerate them.
Instead, he gave them to his partner who posted them on the popular Swedish auction site Tradera, which is owned by US giant eBay, where the items went up for sale.
In court it was revealed that the clothing, which also included shoulder straps with the police emblem, were worth an estimated 10,500 kronor.
The Expressen newspaper reported that messages between the former cop and his partner were used in court as evidence.
"Old man you must come home and get those things and hide away. Or something. They are picking me up for questioning now," the 29-year said in the message.
In addition to the 140 day fines his partner has also been slapped with a probation charge and to pay 120 day fines.
The TT news agency reported that the district court viewed it as a serious offence due to the risk that the clothing could fall into the hands of criminals.
