A man posing as a gynecologist lured patients over Skype for his own sexual gratification, Italian media reported on Thursday. The alleged voyeur was arrested after a 16-year-old girl reported an incident to the police.

The fake medical professional faces charges of sexual assault for luring women between the northern city of Bologna and the southern town of Latiano, Puglia, on Skype for ‘gynecological examinations’.

The man would then ask patients to touch themselves under the pretence of a medical examination for his own sexual gratification, La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno reported.

Among the charges is an incident involving a 16-year-old girl in Latiano.

Last August, the suspect allegedly phoned the girl, a gynecology patient, posing as the owner of a laboratory for clinical analysis.

He told her that she had a vaginal infection and that the gynecologist “needed to check her”.

The girl said she was persuaded to connect over the online calling service Skype where the man encouraged her to engage in masturbation.

At first, said the girl, she was unaware of what was happening. It was only when his requests became more insistent and specific that she decided to end the conversation.

The girl then informed her parents and reported the incident to Brindisi police.

She helped police to identify the suspect through mugshots from previous similar cases.

Although they had no difficulty in tracking down the suspect, police have yet to determine how he managed to obtain the medical results and telephone numbers of gynecology patients.
