Police in Rome have launched a manhunt after two inmates broke out of a prison using a rope of knotted sheets, Il Messaggero reported.

Giampiero Cuttini, 41 and Sergio Di Palo,35, made there escape from Rebibbia prison last night after climbing down a boundary wall using sheets tied together, the newspaper said.

They are then thought to have made their way through a car park and onto Via Tiburtina, the road that connects Termini, Rome’s main train station, and the city’s outer ring-road.

Cuttini was in jail for robbery while Di Palo, who also escaped from house arrest fifteen years ago, was there for robbery and drug use.

They were being held in the prison’s ‘Third House’, which houses prisoners for drug-related offences and where security isn’t as tight as in other parts of the jail.

“We are trying to ascertain exactly how they escaped, as well as find them,” Luigi Pagano, the vice president of the Department of Prison Administration, was quoted by TGCOM24 as saying.

The last time someone escaped from Rebibbia was 20 years ago although there have been a number of recent escapes from other prisons across the country. In December, two killers escaped after being granted day release.

In 2012, authorities granted day release 25,275 times, from which prisoners failed to return 52 times, according to figures from the justice ministry.
