A man in northern Sweden who delivered a baby in his car has been awarded a free T-shirt from hospital staff who were impressed with his efforts.

The man's pregnant partner awoke with labour pains in the middle of the night and headed immediately to emergency care with the soon-to-be father behind the wheel.

But when the couple were still 20 minutes away from the Lycksele hospital, the man was forced to pull over as the baby couldn't wait any longer to enter the world.

The couple called an ambulance, but decided they didn't have time to wait and the man began to deliver the baby himself, assisted by a real midwife who gave instructions over the phone.

He delivered a healthy baby boy inside the car.

Staff at the local birthing centre were pleased with the man's quick thinking.

"They said I was calm, but I was in a state of shock at the same time. When the baby came out, he didn't cry at first, but when I did what the midwife said he got going and started breathing," the father told the local Norran newspaper.

Staff members at the hospital gave the man a T-shirt for his efforts with the words "Barnmorska Lycksele BB" ('Lycksele Midwife Birthing Centre').

The incident doesn't mark the first time a baby has been born inside a car in Sweden. In August last year, a child was born in a crashed car after the father lost control of the vehicle during the heated moments of birth. The newborn survived, as did all the other passengers.
