Tech speak in the Swedish workplace
From the troglodytic "e-post" to the double entendre "musmatta", we've got your back covered for tech speak in the Swedish office.
As everything is done on computers these days, knowing IT terminology in Swedish is vital. Here are a few starters for you.
"Musen" ("The mouse")
"Skärmen" ("The screen")
"Tangentbordet" ("The keyboard")
"Musmatta" ("Mouse pad")
"Laddare" ("Charger")
"Kan jag låna din laddare? Har nån en laddare jag kan låna?" ("Can I borrow a charger? Does anyone have a charger I can borrow?")
You've got mail
"Kan du skicka ett mejl till mig?" or "Kan du mejla mig?" (“Could you send me an email?”) There may be one or two troglodytes or a language nerd that will call an e-mail "e-post", or even rarer "e-brev", but they're a dying breed.
"Kan du vidarebefordra mejlet till mig?" ("Can you forward the e-mail to me?) But, if you think that pronouncing "vidarebefodra" (vee-dah-re-beh-foord-rah) looks like tongue-twisting torture you can stick to "Skicka vidare mejlet till mig, snälla" ("Send the email on to me, please")
Other useful catch phrases:
"Jag vet inte. Googla." ("I don't know. Google it.")
"Det är ogooglebart." (It is ungoogleable)
"Jag har uppdaterat dokumentet." ("I have updated the file/document")
"Har du lösenordet till wifit?" ("Do you have the password for the wifi?")
And then there was tech breakdown... it comes to us all at some point, every single day, so it's a good idea to be ready. These all speak for themselves.
"Min dator är jätteslö, jag tror att den har ett virus." ("My computer is really slow, I think it’s got a virus")
"Mitt internet har kraschat, funkar det fortfarande för dig?" ("I’ve lost internet! Are you still connected?")
"Min dator har kraschat igen, jag måste starta om den." ("My computer has crashed again, I need to reboot")
"Ingenting funkar ju på det här stället!" ("Nothing works in this bloody company")
Remember, Swedes don't shout. In public.
