A man who allegedly stole a €2.99 packet of pistachios from a supermarket in Genoa is due to stand trial and, if found guilty, could go to prison for up to six months.

After two months of investigation, the court is now lining up its judge, clerks and other staff as it prepares to host what is being hailed as a judicial process record for the Ligurian city of Genoa: the trial of a man accused of stealing pistachios from a Coop supermarket, La Repubblica reported.

The Tunisian was stopped outside the store by security last November after allegedly stealing the nuts worth €2.99, and management didn't hesitate to take legal action.

Cases of “housewives, retirees and teenagers pilfering small items such as toothpaste, a piece of Parmesan cheese and pine nuts” are a regular occurrence in the courts as stores seek justice for their stolen produce, La Repubblica said.

Offenders risk six months in prison, reduced to two if they have no criminal records, or a monetary penalty equal to €275 for each day of imprisonment.

Italy is harsh on its petty criminals: in November, a 64-year-old was also charged with theft after stealing apples and nuts worth €4 from a supermarket in Imperia, a seaside town in the northern region of Liguria.
