Almost 5,000 photos and videos have appeared on the photo-sharing site, Instagram, as part of a contest to show the rest of the world just how good Italian food is.

Tagged with #Italiaintavola, the photos aim to tell the story of the 'bel paese' through food and wine, news agency ANSA reported.

The most popular photos from each region will be used in a local exhibition, which will be accompanied by cooking demonstrations.

The contest was organised by the Italian 'Igers', or 'Instagrammers', a community of dedicated fans of the social network, which is owned by Facebook. 'Igers' use Instagram to organize photography exhibitions, cultural events and competitions, with the aim of building community spirit through photography.

At the moment, Le Marche is the region which has the most contributions, followed by Sardinia, Lombardy, Puglia and Tuscany.

The most popular tags accompanying the photos are #food, #igersitalia, #instafood and #foodporn. The majority of the photos are of traditional, but simple, regional dishes, while the most commented photos are of culurgiones, a Sician style of ravioli, a Piedmontese dip and a Puglian pasta dish.

The contest has also sparked some rivalry between the regions, with some Instagram users debating the origin of different recipes.

The photos can be viewed on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook under the '#italiaintavola' hashtag.
