The chief medical officer at Sweden's high-security mental hospital Säter has recommended that former mass murder convict Sture Bergwall be offered eased restrictions.

Sture Bergwall was known as Thomas Quick during the time he confessed to more than 20 murders. He was convicted of eight murders but the charges were later revoked, one by one, as he withdrew his detailed but at times contradictory confessions. The prisoner has since fought for his release from the mental institution.

Bergwall should now be given the option of less restrictive forms of therapy, recommended chief medical officer Vladislav Ruchkin at the correctional services institution in central Sweden in an official letter to a local administrative court.

"Of course this is a positive decision that Sture Bergwall can now leave the clinic," his lawyer Thomas Olsson told the TT news agency on Tuesday.

Bergwall himself responded to the news by telling tabloid newspaper Aftonbladet that he now hoped to be "free by spring". He has been an inmate at Säter since 1991.
