A 20-year-old woman from Salerno in the southern Italian region of Campania is reported to have been cured of cancer after touching a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The ‘cure’, which has been reported to the Vatican, was announced by a monk during a sermon at Saint Antonio church in the town of Mercato San Severino last Sunday, Corriere del Mezzogiorno reported.

The woman, who was not named during the sermon, is believed to have been cured of cancer after touching the Our Lady of Nazareth statue when it spent a week at the church last April as part of a global pilgrimage.

The statue, scuplted by Gregor Mussner, was blessed by Pope John Paul II during the Jubilee celebrations in 2000.  It has travelled to more than 50 countries over the last 15 years as part of the pilgrimage.
