Swedish police have been able to hold preliminary questioning with the twelve-year-old boy found battered by the side of the road on New Year's Eve. The assault has reportedly caused the boy's family to move from the area.

The injured boy was found near a bus stop by a local church in the town of Borås in the late afternoon. He was reportedly conscious at the time but was sedated upon arrival in hospital in Gothenburg.

There have not been any arrests but the police said earlier in the week that they were looking for a man in his early twenties. No motive for the attack has been specified.

An unnamed source told the local Borås Tidning newspaper that the boy had received knife wounds and been shot, but local police declined to comment on the information.

Several media outlets reported that the boy was an asylum seeker from the Balkan who lived with his family in accommodation provided by a local church.

"There was a flat they had at their disposal for a time, and they've lived there until recently but don't live there now," a parish spokesperson told the TT news agency. "They have chosen to move in connection with this incident."

The police were able to speak with the boy on Friday, when he awoke, but did not give any information about what was said during questioning. They have opened a preliminary investigation into attempted murder, alternatively attempted manslaughter.
