Plenty of revellers around the world would have woken up in strange places on New Year’s Day, but at least they got to enjoy a night out first. Not so for one unlucky Frenchwoman who spent the entire evening stuck in a toilet.

How was your New Year’s Eve?

Did you have a hard time getting a taxi home – perhaps having to wait as long as 20 minutes for one to come along? Were you designated driver for your friends, on the most alcohol-soaked night of the year?

Whatever your horror story is, it can’t compare to the experience of one poor, unfortunate woman in eastern France, who woke up in a toilet on New Year’s Day, not because she’d had such an outrageously fun New Year’s Eve, but because she was stuck there, all night.

According to local newspaper Le Progrès, the domestic care worker had popped over to the house of a client in the town of Bourg-en-Bresse, near Lyon, on Tuesday afternoon.

The woman, aged in her 50s, had been asked by him to check in on his cats and feed them from time to time while he was away.

No good deed goes unpunished, though, it would seem, as what should have been a short exercise turned into an absolute nightmare when the chronically unlucky woman made the fateful decision to use the toilet before heading back home.

Despite her best efforts to reopen the bathroom door, she found herself completely stuck inside the WC for the rest of the day, while unbeknownst to her, her friends had reported her missing.

After a fruitless search, and a long, deeply unpleasant New Year's Eve in the toilets for her, police finally tracked her down by geolocating her mobile phone, and retrieved her on Wednesday morning, according to Le Progrès.

It is not known at this time why the woman was apparently unable to raise the alarm with the device.

Getting stuck away from your friends and family appears to have become something of a New Year’s tradition in its own right in France.

Last year, a 73-year-old woman spent the night of December 31st trapped in a supermarket in the northern city of Roubaix.

She did, at least, manage to make it beyond the toilets, but found the store empty and locked after emerging from them, and wasn’t rescued until 10.30am the next day.

In an even more bizarre incident an 80-year-old woman called Renée was left stranded for three days after getting her head wedged underneath a radiator after a fall. (SEE BELOW)
