Jobless man dies after setting himself on fire
A 28-year-old man who set himself alight after losing his job died of his injuries at a hospital in Naples on Christmas Eve.
Fausto Genovese, originally from Potenza in the southern Italian region of Basilicata, doused himself with flammable liquid and set himself on fire on December 21st, Il Quotidiano della Basilicata reported.
Genovese had been out of work for five months after losing his job at Baragiano, an engineering firm, which was forced to close because of the economic crisis.
In a suicide note written to his parents and girlfriend, he said the lack of job prospects caused him to take his own life, the newspaper said.
Neighbours remembered Genovese as someone who was “always active” and not used to being out of work, Il Quotidiano della Basilicata reported.
His death, at Cardarelli hospital in Naples, came just days after a 51-year-old man died of his injuries after setting himself alight in St Peter’s Square in Vatican city.
