Parts of north-eastern Switzerland were shaken by a 3.6 magnitude earthquake on Friday morning, the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) has confirmed.

The tremor, which occurred at 8:08 am, awoke residents in the town of Sargans, north-eastern Switzerland.

“A 3.5 magnitude earthquake at 8:08 am in Sargans...'Oh, that’s why I woke up!'" tweeted @ItsNadine71335 after reading about the incident in 20 Minutes.

The quake was also reportedly felt over the border in Liechtenstein.

“I just jumped out of bed,” a 20 Minutes reader from Balzers, Liechtenstein, was quoted as saying.

The tremor was even reported further south in Landquart, in the canton of Graubünden, with another reader reporting that their bed was shaking.

According to the Swiss Seismological Service, this earthquake is the second to occur in the region this month.

On December 12th a quake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was recorded at 01:59 am. The tremor was reported by more than 500 people in the area.

Around 6,000 tremors of this scale occur every year around the world, according to Wikipedia, but do not cause significant damage.
