Family cat and dog killed in truck blast

A cat and a dog were killed in the gigantic explosion on Tuesday at a quarry in northern Norway, while 1,500 pigs face emergency slaughter.
A truck carrying 15 tons of liquid explosive caught fire, and then detonated, creating a huge blast which ripped through a farm just 200m away. The blast shattered the house's windows, while burning debris rained down on its roof, causing a fire which almost certainly killed the family dog and cat locked inside. "The house is completely destroyed. Me and my partner's house has completely burned down," Steinar Jakobsen (57), told VG. "We left a dog and a cat dog behind. We were told that we could come back later, but now everything is burned." The pressure wave from the blast also seriously damaged farm buildings, breaking windows cars and doors, and putting the ventilation and feeding systems for his 1,500 pigs out of action. Jakobsen on Thursday told VG that he would probably be forced to slaughter the pigs. "We're working hard on the pigs and giving them water. They felt an enormous pressure wave and are suffering a shortage of water and food. They'll probably have to undergo emergency slaughter. The building is destroyed and the automatic feeding and ventilation system has shut down." According to Norway's NTB newswire the explosion was so powerful that it was recorded on earthquake monitoring systems hundreds of kilometres away. Parts of the truck were found 800m from where it exploded in Ømmervassveien, between Ømmervatn and Drevja in Nordland county.
