German carmaker Volkswagen plans to build a factory in Poland that could churn out 100,000 vehicles a year, Poland's leading automotive market analysts said on Thursday.

"According to our unofficial information, Volkswagen will set up a site in Poland to build its Crafter utility vehicles," said industry expert Dariusz Balcerek.

"Construction of the new factory will get underway in March 2014 and it will be fully operational by 2018."

The Crafter model is now manufactured in Germany at Mercedes plants in Ludwigsfelde and Düsseldorf under an agreement with Volkswagen Daimler, which will soon expire, according to Balcerek.

Last week, Polish Economy Minister Janusz Piechocinski told reporters that "one of the world's largest automakers" was poised to announce its intention to build a new factory in the country this month but declined to elaborate.

The Volkswagen Group already produces Caddy 3 and T5 utility vehicles in Poland, as well as buses and engines.
