Friday 13th may be deemed unlucky for some, but German statisticians have calculated it is safer than other Fridays if you are travelling on the country's roads.

On the three days where Friday fell on the 13th in 2012, there was an average of 921 traffic accidents injuring or killing 1,197 people, the national statistics office Destatis said on Thursday.

On all the other Fridays in 2012 there was an average of 970 accidents with 1,253 casualties. “Friday 13th is no more dangerous than any other Friday,” the statisticians concluded.

They did find, however, that Friday is the most dangerous day to drive as there is a higher volume of traffic with commuters trying to get home and people heading off on weekend breaks.

On other week days in 2012 the average number of accidents causing injury or death was far lower, standing at 794 incidents and 1,029 casualties.
