A 60-year-old woman from Treviso set up brothels from a number of apartments across the northern Italian city after the cleaning firm she had worked for went bust.

The woman raked in an average €8,000 a month after subletting four apartments and hosting sex services from them, Corriere del Veneto reported.

She is believed to have run the brothels, which were advertised on various websites, since 2008.  Her main profits came from Romanian girls and Brazilian transsexual prostitutes whom she would meet at the airport before escorting them to the apartments.

The local police raided her home after being tipped off by an elderly neighbour who had grown tired of the nightly disturbances, Corriere del Veneto said.

Two of the apartments were in Conegliano, while the other two were in nearby Mestre.

The woman is accused of assisting and profiting from prostitution and is currently in prison in Giudecca.

Brothels have been illegal in Italy since 1958, although the Northern League is calling for a national referendum to change the law.
