Norwegians are spending more time on the road but are sticking to trips and holidays at home, while the frequency of travel abroad stagnated toward the end of summer.

Statistics Norway (Statistisk sentralbyrå) on Friday revealed that Norwegians made 7.4 million domestic trips in the third quarter of 2013 - about 2.5 trips per citizen. Domestic travel thus shot up by some 26 percent compared to the same quarter last year.

Voyages with an over-night stay numbered 4.3 million over the three-month period.

Overall, travel both at home and abroad went up. More Norwegians are travelling and many are travelling more often than before, the NTB agency summarized.

Most of those holidaying in Norway chose to take their own car or rent one for the purpose. The majority still stayed with friends and relatives rather than spending the night in a hotel, however.
