The October figures point to a worsening situation for Italy’s 15-24-year-olds, with the number of unemployed young people up from September’s 40.4 percent.

Youth unemployment has jumped by 4.7 percent over the past year, from 36.5 percent in October 2012.

The unemployment crisis is also hitting the broader population, with the rate hitting 12.5 percent in October, compared to 11.1 percent in the same month last year.

Nearly 3.2 million Italians are now unemployed, compared to just below 2.9 million a year ago.

Men are more likely to have jobs, with 12 percent unemployed compared to 13.2 percent of women in Italy, the Istat figures showed.
