A lost and drunken driver was lucky to escape with her life when her Volkswagen car was struck by a train in a railway crossing in the canton of Aargau.

The incident occurred just before midnight on Wednesday in the municipality of Oftringen after the 30-year-old woman used a global positioning system (GPS) app in a bid to find her way home, cantonal police said.

When she followed the instructions of the GPS on her smartphone, the car ended up on the tracks as a barrier descended, police said.

The woman exited the car to get help just before the regional passenger train smashed into the vehicle.

Police said she had previously driven a girlfriend to a residence in the district of Zurzach and then got lost as she attempted to return to the canton of Zurich, where she lives.

The woman had no idea where she was and was in the process of seeking help at a nearby home when the collision occurred, police said.

Paint was scraped on the train but estimated damage to the car totalled 20,000 francs.

Police said the woman's driving licence was seized after she failed a breathalyser test.
