A severed pig's head has been dumped at the Salerno home of an Italian politician, Italian media reported.

The pig’s head was found on the post box of Vincenzo De Luca, an MP and mayor of the southern city of Salerno, Corriere del Mezzogiorno said on Tuesday.

The head, with a lemon wedge in its mouth, was spotted by a fellow resident of De Luca’s apartment building, who raised the alarm.

The mayor was in Rome at the time and responded on Facebook. “Thanks for your affection. I am grateful for the gastronomic attention,” De Luca said, joking that he thought the choice of the pork dish was “a little heavy”.

The motive behind the stunt remains unknown, although animal heads have in the past been used as a warning sign and threat of violence. In July, a farmer in Sicily came home to find all of his sheep slaughtered and one of the animal’s heads left on his doorstep, thought to be a response to his speaking out against illegal waste dumping.
