It is more famous for its ancient beer halls, world-class football stadium and medieval churches, but glass recycling bins have been named one of Munich’s highest-rated attractions by reviewers on Google.

The five bins, in the central district of Lehel, have beaten the city’s opera house, royal palaces and parks to become one of the city’s most highly-rated attractions on Google Maps.

Enthusiastic reviews on Google from satisfied recyclers have given the bins a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars, placing it ahead of the Haus der Kunst with 4.4 stars and the Allianz arena football stadium, which merited only 4.5.

The bins are rated as highly as the famous BMW Museum.

Despite competing attractions in the area including the "Museum Mile" and the English Garden, the glass bin on Lehel's Seitzstraße has excited visitors the most.

One tongue-in-cheek reviewer said: “I read about this oasis of recycling in a guide book. If you're ever in Munich, you definitely have to make a trip there.”

Another wrote: “Personally, I appreciate the ease of operation of the glass recycling containers. Everything has been thought of here.”

And another joked: “I finally decided to move into the recycling container with my family and I can only say it was worth it! Ok, the fact that bottles are occasionally thrown in is somewhat annoying, but the residents adhere to the throwing ban from 6pm to 7am - I can live with that!”

Which excited fan first created the Google profile and entry on Google maps is unclear.

But the local newspaper, the Münchner Merkur carried a report about the bins on Friday, while blog Schlecky Silberstein, which first reported on the highly-rated containers, congratulated the outstanding bins on their success.

However, it added: “A mention in Lonely Planet is still a long way off.”
