Schools closed as storm clean-up continues

Schools were closed and over 11,000 households in northern Sweden remained without electricity on Monday morning as a result of storm Hilde which battered the region over the weekend.
While the storm has blown over, the consequences of the destruction remain, with households in Västerbotten the worst affected. Over 11,000 customers of power firms Eon and Vattenfall awoke to a second day of no electricity on Monday, with some 6,800 of the affected in Västerbotten, which covers the area around Umeå on the coast up to Storuman along the Norwegian border. A further 2,000 households in Jämtland and 2,400 in Västernorrland are also suffering a power outage with temperatures forecast to plummet to below zero in the coming days. The storm has forced several schools across the region to keep their doors closed on Monday. According to Sveriges Radio, Dikanäs school in Wilhelmina, Knaften school in Lyksele, and preschools in Nästansjö and Latikberg are among those closed. The storm, named Hilde by the Norwegian meteorological office, swept across northern Sweden during Saturday night. Wind speeds in isolated areas reached as high as 180 km/hour. Aside from the electricity problems Hilde left a slew of fallen trees in its wake and police in Jämtland on Sunday urged caution on the roads. The E12 motorway crossing the border between Sweden and Norway was closed in both directions on Monday morning due to windy weather on the Norwegian side, according to a report from The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket).
