Norway challenges the world to internet chess

Norway has challenged the entire world to a game of chess on the Internet Chess Club in a stunt organised by the Aftenposten newspaper to mark Magnus Carlsen's world championship bid.
In the game, Norway vs the World, any chess fan with an Norwegian internet address is eligible to vote for white's moves, while those with internet addresses based elsewhere can vote on black's response. The game, which began at 10am on Monday, is being hosted here by the Internet Chess Club, an online forum favoured by serious players, including several grandmasters. For players based in Norway, the game can be accessed here. The game started conventionally, with each side putting forward a pawn, and Norway then challenging The World's pawn by moving its knight forward, but later ran into trouble with some suspiciously erratic moves from the world's team. "We have had some sabotage of “The World’s team” during the day, so we’ll probably start up again tomorrow as we can add some security measures," said Aftenposten's Lars Raaum, who helped set up the game. He said that Aftenposten had the idea at the start of this month, when it was looking for ways to engage more people in chess during the championship match. He said some 4,000 players had taken part on Monday, although he didn't know if any grandmasters had taken part. "We know that several Grandmasters are a part of the Internet Chess Club network, but we are not sure who exactly is taking part. We expect more serious players to join as the game heats up!"
