An Italian MP cast doubt on the 2011 killing of Osama Bin Laden, Al-Qaeda leader, during a parliamentary speech on Thursday about Afghanistan.

Paolo Bernini, the Five Star Movement (M5S) politician who sparked controversy in September by saying the 9/11 attacks were "an inside job", was asking why Italian troops remain in Afghanistan 12 years on from the US-led invasion when he made the controversial comments.

“I would like to remind you that Bush’s justification to intervene in Afghanistan was the war against terrorism, with the aim of destroying Al-Qaeda and capturing or killing Osama Bin Laden.

“Al-Qaeda continues to have victims in Syria, alongside the rebels - those which America would like to help.

“Bin Laden, I don’t know, was supposed to have been killed two years ago,” Bernini said.

In Italian, Bernini said: “Bin Laden, beh, dovrebbe essere morto due anni fa”. “Beh” is a commonly-used term akin to a person shrugging their shoulders, while “dovrebbe” uses the verb tense to express doubt.

This is not the first time Bernini has spoken in parliament about supposed cover-ups by the US government.

On this year's anniversary of the 9/11, which prompted the military intervention in Afghanistan, he argued that the official version of the attacks, in which around 3,000 people were killed, has been “proved from every point of view” and was, in fact, a cover-up.
