Oslo officially applied to host the 2022 Winter Olympics on Wednesday, facing significantly improved chances of winning after Munich's withdrawal.

One day before the application deadline, Norway's capital sent a letter with a preliminary bid to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Oslo2022
organisation said.

The city's proposal features an "ultra-compact and urban" project with a relatively low budget of 34 billion kroner (4.1 billion euro, $5.5 billion).

Oslo hosted the Winter Olympics in 1952 while Lillehammer hosted a highly successful competition in 1994, making the Norwegian capital a clear favourite for 2022.

Public support is guaranteed, after 55 percent of residents voted yes to the Olympic bid last September.

The other candidate cities are Stockholm, Beijing, Krakow (with events held in other Polish locations and in neighbouring Slovakia), Lviv (Ukraine) and
Almaty (Kazakhstan).

Munich, a potentially tough competitor and who finished runner-up for the 2018 Winter Games, finally withdrew its bid after voters rejected the project last Sunday.

The host city will be voted on by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members at the IOC session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015.
