Germany flies 70 tonnes of aid to Philippines
Germany flew out 70 tonnes of aid to the Philippines on Wednesday to help the 11 million people affected by typhoon Haiyan. Transportable water treatment plants were among the equipment destined for the crisis-hit country.
The transport plane left Berlin Schönefeld airport carrying tents, cooking sets and hygiene equipment heading for the hardest-hit area of the country, Cebu, the German Red Cross said.
The plane is being sent by the Red Cross and national aid organization Technisches Hilfswerk who have also put on the flight two portable drinking water treatment plants, camping equipment, tools to repair the country’s devastated infrastructure and lab equipment with which to analyze water samples.
Meanwhile the German government has donated €1 million and has already delivered 25 tonnes of supplies to the Philippines.
The Red Cross has put out an appeal for donations to help those affected by the huge typhoon which has killed more than 2,000 people and left thousands homeless, according to the latest estimates.
