Actress fined for La Dolce Vita fountain stunt
Italian actress Valeria Marini has been fined €160 for stepping into Rome's Trevi Fountain in a bid to mimic a scene from Federico Fellini's 1960s classic, La Dolce Vita.
Rome's authorities were furious after Marini waded into the Trevi Fountain, just like the film's protagonist Sylvia, played by Anita Ekberg, as part of a shoot for a TV show to promote Rome's International Film Festival, which is currently taking place.
The sight attracted the attention of many bemused tourists, who watched as Marini, wearing just a black minidress, and the show's host, Alessandro Di Sarno, braved the autumn temperature to recreate the iconic scene on Monday afternoon, Giornalettismo.com reported.
But the authorities were less impressed with the 2013 version of the stunt, with Dario Nanni, President of the Commission of Public Works, describing the performance as “inappropriate” and “damaging".
"Others might be encouraged to emulate her, thus jeopardising the safety of Rome's monuments," he added.
Both Marini, who describes herself as an "actress, showgirl and fashion designer", and Di Sarno, were fined €160.
Nanni also criticized national broadcaster Rai, saying it should not allow its programmes to encourage the violation of rules and safeguards put in place by authorities.
La Dolce Vita, also famous for coining the term 'paparazzi', follows seven days in the life of a dissatisfied Roman journalist, Marcello, who is infatuated by the glamorous Sylvia.
Marini mimicked Ekberg's sensual moves and repeated the phrase 'Come here' to Di Sarno, although they chose not to re-enact the famous kiss in the fountain.
