"We will confirm our intention to be a candidate for hosting the games before the November 14 deadline," Ingunn Olsen, a spokeswoman for the Oslo2012 committee told AFP a week ahead of the closing date for applications.

Already considered one of the favourites to host -- not least due to the success of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer -- the bid won the support of more than half of the city's population (55,1 percent) in a recent referendum.

Oslo faces tough competition from a long list of declared or expected candidates including Beijing, the German city of Munich, Almaty in Kazakhstan, Lviv in Ukraine and a joint bid from Krakow in Poland and neighbouring Slovakia.

According to Norwegian media reports, the newly elected centre-right Minister for Culture, Thorhild Widvey, supports Oslo's bid.

The host town is expected to be announced on July 31, 2015. The 2014 Winter Games take place in Sochi, Russia and the 2018 event in
Pyeongchang, South Korea.
